The first Taal Photo Trek slated for September 19 has been filled up, so we’re scheduling another one: Taal Photo Trek 2 on October 3, 2009. The same itinerary, the same mentors, same beautiful places, only the date has changed.

Like the first one, Taal Photo Trek 2 will also have an optional pre-trek orientation and briefing the day before, Friday October 2, at the FPPF in Intramuros. The day of the trek itself, on Saturday October 3, will have the same program in Taal town and in the Volcano Island including shoots at the Ilagan ancestral home, the Taal Basilica and in San Nicolas town, as well as a picturesque photo trek, on horseback, to the Crater Rim.

A week after, on October 10, you can have your photos critiqued at the FPPF in Intramuros by travel photographer George Cabig, who mentors the Taal Photo Trek with professional photographer Amir Alba.

The FPPF Monday got a commendation from the Quezon Power Plant operated by Covanta (Phils) in Barangay Cagsiay, Mauban, Quezon for recently conducting photography workshops right in the power plant complex. The workshops enabled the power plant personnel to more effectively document their work activities while also providing them an artistic diversion from day-to-day work in their relatively isolated work area. The power plant personnel who attended the FPPF workshops are avid photographers. They produced a body of work which were also lauded by management and were displayed during last Monday’s event.

Highlight of the event was the launching of their waste hauling truck powered purely by straight vegetable oil (SVO), sourced from used cooking oil, eliminating the need for noxious diesel fuel. Covanta (Phils) is projecting an environment-friendly corporate image.

Batch 19 of 2009: Persistence Has Its Virtue

Batch 19 Portrait winners (L-R): Lindy Go 4th Place, Michael Reyes 2nd, Jelo Deveraturda standing in for David Tan 1st Place, Rubi Rosa Barion Arreza 3rd Place and Rolly Borlongan 5th.

Rubi Rosa (she’s that lady in the photo above, 2nd from right) came to the workshop with her shiny new DSLR camera expecting to learn a lot of things about photography, only to be frustrated by what she considered to be too much technical matters on the very first day of class. Compounding her bewilderment was the thought that she was being left behind by her younger classmates who seemed to be absorbing the lessons without difficulty – technical terms and all!

“Generation gap,” she thought. She blamed it on the fact that she was a lot older than most of her batchmates (she actually looks very young – even gorgeous, as you can see in the photo). She almost gave up on the second day and decided that she would no longer attend the subsequent sessions. But other voices prevailed, and she persisted. By persisting, she now avers that she has emerged from the workshop with a new perspective on photography, learning a lot in the process.

On graduation day, Rubi Rosa won a trophy for her portrait entry; she emerged as 3rd Place winner in her class.

The winners:
