Jonah Ramirez shows her two trophies for winning both categories – Portrait and Still Life – in her Basic Photography class. Her grand slam win also earned her a scholarship to the FPPF Advanced Photography Workshop.

She worked hard to earn it. Jonah Ramirez of Las Piñas, Metromanila topped her class in Basic Photography, winning First Place in both portrait and still life categories by working days – and nights – to complete her final entries. Three days for the portrait and another three days for still life, she said, until she was satisfied with the outcome. Jonah is with Batch 26, Basic Photography Workshop, Sundays, September 20 to October 18, 2009.

For her excellent work, the 29-year-old mother of three happily took home two trophies, both First Place, which also won for her a scholarship to the Advanced Photography Workshop, paving the way for a higher level of photography education for the budding photographer. FPPF Director Lito Beltran awarded the scholarship to Jonah during the final day of the workshop. Jonah works in property management for RCBC Plaza in Makati.

New Nikon D3S Full Frame DSLR Touts High ISO Range, Improved Movie Mode

Nikon D3S FX Full Frame DSLR

The new Nikon D3S FX full-frame DSLR camera features an impressive base sensitivity range of ISO 200 to ISO 12,800, expandable to an amazing 10 stop range of ISO 100 to ISO 102,400. This means the new camera can offer incredible low-light shooting capabilities.

The secret? A larger pixel pitch – 8.45 microns – in a roomy 12.1-megapixel sensor that measures 36×23.9mm. This results in cleaner images even at much higher ISOs.

Nikon said the D3S builds upon the success of the Nikon D3—the professional digital SLR that set new standards for DSLR performance. It uses a newly designed, Nikon original 12.1-megapixel FX-format CMOS sensor that also integrates its low-light ability to High Definition (HD) video. The D3S offers a refined D-Movie mode smooth 1280×720 video at a cinematic 24fps, with a new algorithm that greatly reduces the phenomenon of “rolling shutter” typical to D-SLRs while panning.

The D3S also offers a new image sensor cleaning function that generates vibrations at four different frequencies, 100% viewfinder coverage, improved 51-point Multi-CAM3500 AF system, three alternative crop modes, new Quiet shutter release mode, in-camera RAW processing options, and five options for Active D-Lighting.

The Nikon D3S will begin shipping in late November at an estimated retail price of USD5,200 (about PHP260,000) body only.

Nobel Prize in Physics Awardees

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2009 jointly to Charles K. Kao, Willard S. Boyle and George E. Smith for their contributions to scientific research.

Half of the award goes to Charles K. Kao of the Standard Telecommunication Laboratories, Harlow, UK, and Chinese University of Hong Kong “for groundbreaking achievements concerning the transmission of light in fibers for optical communication.”

The other half goes to Willard S. Boyle and George E. Smith, Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, NJ, USA “for the invention of an imaging semiconductor circuit – the CCD sensor.” The charge-coupled device (CCD) transforms light patterns into useful digital information and is the basis for many forms of imaging, including cameras, camcorders and satellite surveillance.
